Contacting the Family Court

There may be a number of occasions where you will need to contact the Court directly in the course of your matter.

To contact the Family Court of Western Australia via phone, please call (08) 9224 8222. For Country Free Call, dial 1800 199 228. Please note that you will not be able to call the Court to speak to a Judge or Magistrate directly. You will be able to speak with a Court Registry officer, who will be able to assist you with procedural information on your matter, general queries, and put you through to the relevant departments of the Court as required. If your matter is already in the Court, be sure to have your “PTW” file number ready.

To fax the Court with documents or correspondence, dial (08) 9224 8360. Ensure that you address all correspondence to the Principal Registrar. If your matter is already in the Court, you can also Attention your correspondence to a particular Judge or Magistrate.

You can also Attention mailed correspondence to a particular Judge or Magistrate if your matter is already in the Court.

It is important that, if your matter is already in the Court, that you reference your “PTW” file number. You can find a sample letter to the Court below.

If your matter is already in the Court, you need to ensure that copies of any and all correspondence and applications you forward to the Court are sent to each party in your matter as well (including Independent Children’s Lawyers if applicable). This is a requirement under the Family Court Rules.

Your correspondence to the Court cannot include evidence or requests for Orders. You can only give evidence to the Court in affidavit format and if you have permission to do so as part of your application. You also can’t request Orders of the Court, unless you have the consent of the other party and they have signed the correspondence along with you. Otherwise, you will have to consider a further application.
